ACTA's understanding of governments new direction and our role moving forward
Seeking Clarity
As you are aware, various messages in the media and from the Government press release regarding the scope of regulation plans in the College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP) have created much confusion. CAP has been clearer in its communication that it will regulate Counselling Therapists and may consider adding Addiction Counsellors and Child and Youth Care Counsellors in the future.
ACTA continues to recognize the need for public protection in the entirety of the counselling professions in Alberta. We hope there will be clarity and future plans identified to address the risk that remains without regulation across the mental health field in Alberta, which can build off the work ACTA has completed.
Same Mandate, New Direction
ACTA’s mandate has always been to protect the public through regulation, and this will not change. At this time, ACTA’s focus will be to follow the government's new direction and support the process of regulating Counseling Therapy under an existing college (College of Alberta Psychologists).
We recognize there are many unanswered questions, and ACTA is committed to finding clarity and communicating this information as it becomes available. We will be setting up town halls to discuss the developments and next steps in the near future.
