ACTA’s Commitment to Public Safety and Professional Accountability

ACTA’s ultimate mandate is to achieve regulation of the counselling therapy profession under Alberta’s Health Professions Act (HPA). ACTA is not a regulatory college under the HPA. Regulation under the HPA would establish a formal framework for public protection with legislated authority to ensure professional accountability and public protection.

In the prolonged absence of statutory regulation under the HPA, ACTA recognizes the importance of protecting the public and maintaining confidence in the profession while working toward completing regulation.

As the organization preparing the counselling therapy profession for regulation and working with the government toward that goal, ACTA provides leadership through the development and implementation of a Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice to promote client safety and public confidence. This reflects ACTA’s commitment to professional accountability, ethical practice, and public trust as the profession advances toward regulation under the HPA.
