Third-Party Insurance Coverage Counselling Therapists

Many insurance providers now recognize ACTA Counselling Therapists as eligible providers for insurance coverage. However, recognition by an insurer does not guarantee that every policyholder has coverage.

Coverage is determined by the specific extended health benefits plan purchased by an employer or individual. While an insurer (such as Alberta Blue Cross, Canada Life, GreenShield, Manulife, or others) may recognize ACTA Counselling Therapists, each employer-sponsored or individual policy sets its own covered provider types, benefit limits, and eligibility criteria.

Clients are encouraged to contact their insurance provider or plan administrator before their appointment to confirm that Counselling Therapists registered with ACTA are covered under their specific plan.

Direct Billing

ACTA Counselling Therapists are recognized for direct billing through Sun Life and TELUS Health. Members who wish to offer direct billing must register individually with the applicable direct-billing platform and meet any provider enrollment requirements.

Direct billing availability does not guarantee that every client’s claim will be covered. Coverage remains subject to the client’s specific insurance plan, including the provider types, services, limits, and eligibility requirements established by their employer or individual policy. Clients should confirm their coverage before receiving services.

Professional Titles and Insurance Coverage

Insurance companies may use different titles for the same or closely aligned counselling profession. Depending on the insurer or benefit plan, eligible providers may be described as Counselling Therapists, psychotherapists, clinical counsellors, or professional counsellors.

These title differences do not necessarily indicate different professions or services. Insurers often group these providers within the same counselling or mental health benefit category. However, the terminology and eligible provider types can vary between insurance companies and between individual policies.
