About Regulation
The Association of Counselling Therapy of Alberta (ACTA) is the organization established because of legislation, and is the precursor organization to the College of Counselling Therapy of Alberta (CCTA).
On December 11, 2018, Bill 30, The Mental Health Services Protection Act, was passed unanimously in the Alberta Legislature. As a result, the professions of Counselling Therapy, Addictions Counselling and Child and Youth Care Counselling will soon be officially included in the Health Professions Act (HPA).
The College of Counselling Therapy of Alberta
A new College of Counselling Therapy of Alberta (CCTA) will be granted the legislated authority to provide oversight and accountability, and protect the public when receiving mental health and addiction services.
The mandate of ACTA is to develop the College so that it is ready to operate, and to bring the professionals into the organization so the transition to the CCTA is as seamless as possible. As the precursor organization to the CCTA, ACTA will “become” the CCTA once proclaimed.
Who is doing the work of ACTA?
ACTA has a Board of Directors composed of individuals working in all the professions set to be regulated by the CCTA, thus ensuring ongoing representation for all of the practitioner associations. An Executive has been elected and these individuals, along with other newly elected members and public representatives, will also form the first Council of the new College. All of these members are volunteers who are committing countless hours to ensure the development of the College. Additionally, ACTA has a Registrar and a Registration Coordinator to assist with the work to be done.
