Regulation Update December 2022

As the year draws to a close, the ACTA Board and staff want to thank all of you for your continued support in our journey toward regulation. Our goal with this “new” Government is to remain relational and solutions-oriented, yet committed to the goal of securing a recommitment to proclaiming the CCTA. We are working together with our many allies to encourage this government to course correct on this important initiative.

Inside :

  • Successes of 2022

  • We still need your help!

  • Thank you to the Indigenous ACTA Member Working group

  • Petition update

  • Upcoming Town halls and Education Sessions

Successes of 2022

Although this year did not go as we had planned (if the government had kept its commitment, we would be over a year into operating the College by now!), we had some victories in 2022, together with your help:

  • We worked hard to secure with the Associate Minister of Mental Health and Addiction to get CCTA back into consideration

  • We gained the support of over 20 UCP MLAs, many of whom are actively advocating for CCTA within the UCP Caucus.

  • We obtained media attention, who continue to follow our progress

  • We launched a successful letter-writing campaign - approximately 3500 letters were sent to the government

  • We obtained over 1000 Petition signatures

  • We launched successful Social media campaigns

  • We have the support of NDP and Alberta Party

  • Questions were asked about regulating counselling at two candidate debates in the Medicine Hat-Brooks byelection

  • We have secured the attention of Premier Smith, whose position is that she is “very open” to regulation by the CCTA

We will continue to do the work needed to keep putting CCTA in front of this government.

Your continued help is needed...

Keep sending emails to your UCP MLAs!  Ask for phone calls and meetings to talk about the importance of regulation.  If you have already had meetings with your MLA, email them for updates.

Click HERE for more information about emailing your UCP MLA (template included - this will take only a few minutes, but help a LOT!)

If you receive a response from your MLA we would appreciate if you would share it with us. Please forward responses to registrar@acta-alberta.ca

Thank you to the Indigenous ACTA Member Working group!

The Indigenous ACTA Member Working Group has been instrumental in supporting the regulation of the counselling professions.  They have been engaging their communities, sending letters of support for CCTA to Treaty Leadership, the Premier and Ministers, as well as meeting with Ministers to discuss the importance of regulation for Indigenous peoples.  THANK YOU!

If you are Indigenous and a member of ACTA, you are welcome to join the Working Group!  Please email registrar@acta-alberta.ca.

Petition Update

We received over 1000 signatures for the petition. This is a new government, with new leadership and new objectives for this fall term. Given this, we will work to obtain a commitment to regulation in the coming months. If we do not have that commitment, the petition is planned to be entered into the legislature in the spring. This timing will also give the opportunity to raise the profile of CCTA before the spring 2023 election. Thank you everyone for giving us this valuable advocacy gift!

Upcoming: town halls and education sessions!

Starting in early 2022, ACTA will be offering seminars on cultural competence in counselling, ethics and standards of practice

ACTA will also be holding town halls in early 2022 to engage your support and ideas for advocacy into the 2023 election.

Stay tuned for more information!
